hello and welcome to the english
as a second language podcast number 22. this podcast is for those who are going
to improve their listening comprehension or speaking/. my name is doctor Jeff
Macquillon from Los Angeles, California.
we are having some problems with
our website and we appologise someone may not to get our website but we are to
fixing it we should be fix it shortly. our web address is www.eslpod.com. we
hope to be fixed in the next couple of days.
now let's start our podcast today
by talking about seeing old friends. Lusy is going to talk about some old
friends that she saw recently and then we will come back and talk about some of
the difficult expressions and vocabulary.
now let's get started.
This is turning out to be a month
for seeing old friends. I got an email a couple of weeks ago from an old friend
from graduate school. She and her family are visiting L.A. for a week. They
plan to see family and to visit old friends. Since she moved out of the
country, I hadn't seen her in ages. I'm looking forward to meeting her new kids
and seeing her again.
Another old friend called this
week. She and I were buddies in our undergraduate days. She plans to swing by
L.A. on her way to San Francisco. We've made plans to have lunch. She works in
Washington D.C. as a political advisor and is usually very busy. I'm glad she
could make time for us to get together.
When we say good-bye to our
friends, we always hope to keep in touch. But, what with this and that, it's
sometimes hard to do. With friends that I've fallen out of touch with, it's
sometimes hard to meet up again and pick up where we left off. We've both moved
on to a different phase in our lives. Some of my old friends have become very
successful, living lives in the fast lane . Other friends are struggling along
and are just making ends meet. But, no matter how they're doing, it's always
nice to touch base again.
I'm really looking forward to
seeing these old pals of mine and catching up after all this time.

lusy talked about some old
friends that she says seen recently by old friends of course she means friends
that have been so many years not necessarily someone who is old in age but
somebody who you have known long time. she mention that it turns out to the
month that she is seeing her old friends to turn out means result to become
this is turning out to be very difficult assignment means this is becoming a
very difficult assignment or you can say this is turning put to a beautiful day
meaning is now becoming beautiful day resulting in a beautiful day. one of
lusy's friend is from gradute school is probably no graduate school is refers
to anything after you bachelor degree. well we call you undergraduate degree so
you study for years bachelor's degree then you study for may be to get graduate
degree. lawers doctors some accountants and many teachers all of these study at
the graduate degrees of course the graduate degrees most common and masters
degree and doctor it phd or medical doctor called md . lusy said that she
hasn't seen her for ages. tha t expression simply for a very very long time.
she said that she and her buddies in her undergraduate days. to be a buddy
means it means very close friends it is informal expression . and it is often
used by children he is my buddy she's is my buddy. sometimes it is used
ironically means it was used really the case someone you don't like someone may
say oh have you see your buddy Jack when he knows you don't like Jack very much
but the most straightforward common means friend. undergraduate means of course
something we have already talked about. her friend, Lusy;s friends that she
said swing by LA on her way to San Francisco swing by means to visit but not to
stay to long . or to go somewhere or the someone swing by post office on the way
of going to the grocery store. i am going stop to the post office go to the
post office pick my mail up and go on i am not stay there very long. to make
time lusy daid her friend make time to us means set a side time to schedule
time to put some time for that person she mentioned that she and her friends
always keep and touch. to keep and touch means simply stay in touch keep
communicating each other by phone email or a letter. so forth. keep in touch is
the means staying touch lusy also use the expression what is this and that when
she said but what with this and that it is sometimes hard to do this is a
somewhat an old expression for a variety of reasons i am going to the reasons i
am going to the gym today but what is
this and that i didn't have time. lusy mentioned that to for touch is the
opposite to keep in touch means no longer have contact with that person she
mentioned that they were going to meet again and pick up where they left off
there are two expressions to pick up
something can means to take something in your hands to pick it up
here to pick up means to start
again it is usually connection with a phrase leave off or left off i left off
in my book on page 25. means i stopped by page 25 and i am going to pick up
where i left off tomorrow which means i would start off in page 29 we can use
this expression everything that starts stops usually when we talk about to take
abut your left off usually mean you are interrupted but not always another
expression she has moved on to a different face in their life face simply means
a part of your life or time of your life
we have sour study works face when we were going to say and find a job lusy
said that some of their friends are very successful living their life in the
past lane. the past line literally in the free way or high wy.past line is th
eline iofor the oadst thing this in usniseres srarres very far left. here it is
a general expression it means living a spending a lot of money i living in a
past lane is a i am doing things and a lot of money. i don't live in the past
lane. now couple of more expressions lusy mentioned that her friends struggling
with her friends aren't making much more money or just making ends meat.
this is to be able to pay your
bills and gas necessities things i need in my lot more this is called making
ends meat means you are not very rich. she mentioned that this is nice vetch
with her friend to touch base means again to stay in touch to keep in contact
sometimes we uses this expression
