`
My computer has been acting up on
me. It's a pretty old model, and I need to replace it. So I decided to call up
my friend Kevin to ask for his two cents. Kevin is a computer whiz. He knows PC
really well since he worked on them for years, but in his heart of hearts, he
is a big Mac fan. So, I thought he would be good person to ask.
I have always used a PC. I do mostly
word processing so I don't need anything fancy. But, I see people I know doing
cool things with photos and video, so I‚ like to take a crack at some new
programs in the future.
Well, I called up Kevin to tell
him what I needed. He immediately started throwing out specs: "You need at
least a 2 Gigahertz processor and 1 Gig of memory, and make sure it has a
writable DVD drive." "Whoa," I said. "All of that is way
over my head. Let's back up for a a minute." Then he laughed and said he
had gotten carried away . "Okay," he said. "Let's start at the
beginning. Now, the processor determines how easily and how fast you can use
the programs on your computer. Got that?" I said that I did. Then he
continued, "How much RAM memory you have is very important, too. Your
computer will go faster the more you have. So, I recommend getting at least 1
Gigabyte of RAM memory." "I think I'm following you so far, " I
said. "Great," he said. Another thing you want is a drive that
handles both CDs and DVDs. Some drives can just read DVDs and some can record
onto blank ones. If you want to burn your own videos, you'll want a
writable DVD drive. Remember though, that's just the computer itself. Don't
forget that you'll need a monitor, a keyboard, a mouse, and speakers."
"OK," I said. "I
think I've got all that. Now, here's the
burning question: Mac or PC?
He said: "Now that's a whole different thing. Do you have a
couple of hours?‚"
Dr. Lucy Tse
now let's listen to the some of
the vocabulary and expressions that Lucy used. Lucy started by telling that her
computer was acting up, to act up means to cause you problems we can use that
expression for computer for say your stomach my stomach is acting up is meaning it causing me problems or we using it
for children the children are acting up they are making noise and theory are
causing problems. so anything can starts causing problems can be acting up Lucy
said that she has a old computer the model of a computer sort of like a type of
computer for example i have a mac in touch computer the model of my computer is
g or you could have a pc computer model is a company is dell and a model can be
inspiran model is another word is type. Lucy said that she called up her friend
kevin. to call up mean the same thing she asked him for to sense to give your
two sense or two sense worth means to give your opinion sometimes this means
just your opinion sometimes expression is used for some humiliaty or some
modesty about your opinion for example i don't know my two sense for but i
think and give your opinion her friend kevin is a computer wits computer wits
ia a good at something or expert for something sometimes we use the term gig
computer gig is expert however because it also implies a someone that you don't
have a social skills you don't relate to other people have problems
communicating to other people. so be careful about using the gig it is
sometimes insult. Lusy said that hearts of hearts the expression hearts of
hearts means deep down you really truly believe what you really truly believe i
live in
California but my heart of heart
i feel like from mini soda meaning that is my most broangest feeling word
processing processing mean to talking documents mockrosoft word for example is
a word processor she said that she wanna to take a crack as new word to take a
new something means to try something usually something that may be you have
someone have difficulty with.for example here let me think is that crack television
is not working you try another words fix it. to take a teack something another
words to try something. when kevin explaining
Lucy she needed he started
throwing out something throe out
something means in this context to give someone information he stared throwing
out giving information usually means he gives information very fast very
quickly phrase to throw out also means put into garbage to get rid of. throw
out and throw away is used for truck and garbage but here to throw out means to
give the person information very quickly specs is a specification specs of a
computer are it is computer speed it is ram it is hard drive how big the hard
drive is all of these are specifications the word we use is specs Lusy said
Kevin he should say writable dvd drive a writable dvd drive for a computer
means you make a discount such as a cd or in this case dvd some dvd is are rom
you can only read a disk you can't make disk and a writable disk is one you can
make a disk.
Lusy said that Kevin gave her the
information is way over her head she said way over my head to over my head
means too difficult something you don't understand is way over your head. she
asked Kevin to back up for a moment to back up
physically means to backwards to move backwards but here it means to go
over it again. to go back to certain point to start over again. Kevin had
gotten carried away to be carried away is you are so excited or so interested
something that you began to talk too fast or start someone to that when you got
carried away. anytime you are very excited that causes you problems getting
carried away after explaining to Lusy Kevin asked her got that this is informal
way of saying do you understand that?
you can respond that yes i get it this
meaning i understand it lusy said later that she said following her so far she said i am following you to
follow something has two meaning it means physically it behind something walk
or drive behind someone but here someone to understand do you follow me means
do you understand me Lusy also use couple of terms blank and term a blank cd or
blank dvd is an empty dvd a cd or dvd or cassette all be in blank or sometimes
the expression my mind is black my mind is went blank it means my mind is empty
it escaped my mind is empty that is the expression to burn the something dvd or
cd as you many of you know is record something it is the same as to write
something to dvd or to write something to a cd means to record it or burn it .
a burning question is a question is very important extremely interesting it is
not related to a term burn in a sense that is hot a burning question means that
is a very important question finally Kevin choosing between a mac or pc is a
whole different thineg that is a completely different topic that require much
more explanation that is going to do it for today's english as a second
