I think the best summer vacation
I've ever taken was when I went out East
a few years ago. Two of my friends and I went on a two-week road trip. At the
time, I was living in St. Paul, Minnesota, in the Midwest of the United States.
Anyway, we started off camping every night, but that got real old, real fast. So we started checking in to hotels after
about the third day. We were headed for
Washington, DC first. Checking in to the hotel was always a bit of a hassle. I wanted to sleep in a double bed, my friends wanted to get a king to share. Lodging is more expensive at a hotel than in a campground, but it
is much, much more comfortable!
We went to the major tourist attractions in Washington, D.C.
- the Capitol, Lincoln's Memorial, the White House. We then headed north,
passing through Boston and headed towards Canada, to Quebec City. When we
arrived at the Canadian border, we had to pass through customs and immigration.
Customs was easy. We had nothing to
declare. Immigration was more of a
pain. We were asked the standard
questions. How long will you be staying in Canada? What is the nature of your visit? Finally, we were
permitted to enter, and we drove on to our destination.
Quebec City is beautiful! Unlike
many cities, there are no tourist traps
to sidetrack you. We spent two days there, then drove on to Montreal. Of
course, we had to pass through customs and immigration again when we re-entered
the United States. Our bags were searched
in customs, but other than that we got through fairly easily. A few days later,
we were back in Minnesota--home sweet
home.
Script by Dr. Jeff McQuillan
our topic today is taking a
summer vacation.
i talked about the vacation that
i took a few years ago i said that i am and my friends went out east in united
estates to go out east is usually go up to the eastern coast in united states.
if you say i am going out west that is more general referring to any part of
the we tern united states. from missisfic river and pacicific ocean. i said
that we have road trip road trip is as you might have been guest a trip where
you drive somewhere. we sometimes used this term informally let's take a road
trip means let's drive somewhere more less for a moment spare a moment means
without a lot of planning. i mentioned that camping is real old real fast that
is a informal expression you hear to get old means to get tire some to be get
tired not very interesting anymore for example going to the movies every friday
gets old means going to the movies get boring if you do this every time or talking
to my friend bob get old after a while meaning it gets boring after a while.
the expression to get old means is pretty common one for example that is get
real old real fast meaning very quickly i said that we are headed Washington DC i used that expression several times we were
headed or we headed to head somewhere means to go somewhere to go in the
direction of somewhere someone may sy to you where are ayou headed you say i am
headed to the dining room aim hungry or i am headed to Chicago to see my sister
you can use this for a bothe long distances and for a short distances. i said
that checking into a hotel is a bit of a hassle a hassle means when you have
problem with something so we say for example it is a real hassle to go thorough
immigration meaning it is a real bother it always causes some problems hassle
is also a problem meaning call someone problems don't hassle me meaning don't
cause me any problems the term double bed a king refer to type of bed you sleep
in king size bed is one of the largest bed it is sleeps two people sleep very
comfortable a California king is svn bigger then a regular king. technically
biggest bed you can get in a hotel in united sates anyway California king. a
double bed is smaller bed two people fit if they are very good friends. if they
are very comfortably close sleep together i said that lodging is a more
expensive than camping out. lodging is general term we use any place we
sleeping or staying overnight or in sone temporary situation so typically
lodging includes camp grounds it includes trailer park you can have a trailer
where you sleep it includes hotel it includes bed and breakfast all of include
considered lodging i said that we went to Washington DC for tourist attraction
tourist attraction is anything that someone visiting that anyone want to see a
museum a memorial a historical sight all of these are tourst attractions here
in southern california los angeles people go to see hollywood billibard senate
monica beach all of these are tourists attractions i live about two miles from
snata monica beach and there are always a lot of tourist there. i said that
went through customs it was a easy because we had nothing to declare declare
something when you go through customs means at you have something you bringing in
that you requires usually you have an permission or that you pay a ax so if you ar coming to the united states and you are
bringing 10 thousand dollars worth of jewelry you should visit me well i am
kidding you are bringing a large amount of merge on dice of something that is
valuable you can often have to pay a tax on that. when you got to the another
country. and that is called making declaration when you declare something put
down your customs form and tell the custom to the officer that is the person at
the customs booth you tell the customs officers you have something to declare.
i said also said immigration was more of a pain it is a colloquial and informal
expression meaning it is similar to hassle to sy something is a pain it is
something is a bothers you it causes you problems. an expression a polite
expiression that is come from the expression pain in the neck or pain in the
butt that we use a lot. nowadays more informally we just say it is a pain
people understand you mean it is a pain in the neck it is problem. when we went
through immigration ai said sea were asked standard question this expression
standard something standard question is standard menu standard routine means
the normal the usual that we normally expect one of the standard question that
you are asked immigration is how long are you staying in this country? you are
also typically asked what's you nature of your visit is nature here means the
reason why area you here is it for your business or is it for yo pleasure
relaxing thenanture of something means also the most important qua lit y of
something sea may say for example nature of jogging that you get tired meaning
the essential part of your jogging is after a whir you get tired i mentioned
that there was no tourist tract to sighttrsc us city tourist trap is type of
tourist attraction that is designed mostly take your money be very entertaining
tourist trap would be the any place that someone goes that isn't very enjoyable
but cost sa lot of money. to sidetrack means literally to track to track means
to trak to to sidetrack means to be pushed off or directed way fro where you
are going. to sidetrack come one yo get talking about someone interstedin
differastn topic interstedin before it is usually used as something as a
negative dside. not things that are less import and so sidetrack by
defic=nition always negative aching that are bags search searched of acoursse
look for if you are stopped nb ythe police finally ai said that awe came home
sweet home this is a very coming and old expression home sweet home this is a
expression that you sometimes see on little sighns in someone's house it is a
just née expresson i am glad to be home it is nice to be here sweet home we
normally think sweet can also mean very nice she is a sweet girl he is a sweet
person means they are very nice they are very polite that is more expression
home west home that is very nice to be here. that is going to ado it
